you might only want to use the brand thats made for microwaving, the plastic plate or grease might have been part of the cause but its also possible if that brand of towel is made from recycled paper, that it has some particles in it that attracted more heat than usual.

It most certainly WILL NOT burn if set to the correct temperature; I DO IT ALL THE TIME at 300 F. Anyone one said no or something rude is ignorant of the burning point of paper/paper towels (roughly 400-500) and did 0 research. If one paper towel were to catch on fire, it is in your metal oven and will burn out quickly anyway. Whether or not chemicals are released from the paper towel I am not sure but there is multiple chemicals that help will color and durability in paper towels. They will burn in the microwave.

There had to be some form of metal in the microwave.
You could microwave a paper towel all day long and it wouldn't catch on fire by itself.
There had to be thin wire, metal shavings, etc. present to create sparks and ignite the towel.
--Unless for some odd reason your microwave itself (magnetron, turnstile motor, etc.) is giving off sparks or overheating. Never heard of this happening though.

This shouldn't happen. It sounds like something is up with your microwave or you are using really really cheap paper towel which has something other than paper in it.

Wow, I've never heard of that before. Maybe there was some metal or something else in your microwave that you didn't know about.
