Most children begin potty training sometime around 18 months to three years of age, so yes, if he is otherwise growing and developing well, it is probably normal that a 2 1/2 year old does not want to use the potty.
Although many parents feel like 3 years is a magic age by which their child must be potty trained, that is not always the case
Even in an older child, it is important to look for signs of readiness before you begin potty training, including:
> staying dry for at least 2 hours at a time
> having regular bowel movements
> being able to follow simple instructions
> being uncomfortable with dirty diapers and wanting them to be changed
> asking to use the potty chair
> asking to wear regular underwear.
You should also be able to tell when your child is about to urinate or have a bowel movement by his facial expressions, posture or by what he says. If your child has begun to tell you about having a dirty diaper you should praise him for telling you and encourage him to tell you in advance next time.
Things to avoid when toilet training your child are beginning during a stressful time or period of change in the family (moving, new baby, etc.), pushing your child too fast, and punishing mistakes (treat accidents and mistakes lightly). Be sure to go at your child's pace and show strong encouragement and praise when he is successful.

I started potty training my daughter when she was around 21 months. That is about 3 months before 2. I am using a chart for each month and if she doesn't pee in her pants then she gets to put a sticker on that day and at the end of the month, I count up how many staickers she has and I give her that many Hershey kisses. It really works, because she is turning 2 next week and I started doing it about 3 months ago, and on the second month she only missed 8 days in all, and in the third month she only missed 4 days. It really works!

One year but he did not potty train until around 3 years. Boys are stubborn and you cannot rush them

The excellent age is the age while the specified youngster is equipped. Which possibly 18 months, or two years, or two one million/two, or three, or later. The 'avererage' variety appears to be round two one million/two-three one million/two, however appear at your youngster, no longer the calendar. Given that your youngster naturally ISN'T equipped, there is not any factor in dashing it. As you assert, it'll simply be 'a nightmare' and a waste of everybody's time.

I started early, just after my son turned one, but only showing him the potty and letting him sit on it. Start slow and don't get discouraged.

When diapers got expensive! Pampers ouch!! Well, she was about a year and a half and getting longer than the changing mat. I bought these cute small foot stools and taught her to use the bathroom straight away making it fun with clapping, letting her flush the toilet and putting extra effort in entertaining her with songs and funny faces. I would also express alot of dissaproval if she messed in her diapers. She's two now and I use Pullups but they are getting expensive too :)
