The Middle or Dark ages was the period when Christianity ruled the European world through the collusion/coercion/cooperation between the Church and monarchies and suppressed all other learning, science and arts which were either not under direct Church control or indirectly via the 'christened' kings and lords' kingdoms.
As a result, all major branches of science, mathematics, arts and healings were suppressed and at the risk of the enthusiasts being declared heretics or devil-worshippers/conspirators under the pain of death and torture.
As a result, it was during this same 'Dark' period that Islam flourished and also nourished the growth of science and mathematics, the foundation of which came both from the East (China, India, etc.) and from the knowledge in 'suppressed' Europe.

This concept of "dark ages" is from the history of the struggle between the secularism and the churches (Christian history).
In the history of secularism vs the churches, religion as administer by the churches is considered the hindrance of development and scientific knowledge.
From the Islamic history, when religion ruled (especially in the era of the prophet Muhammad), it is considered the "age of light and prosperity" because people prosper when ruled by knowledgable religious leader.
In contrast with other religion, Islamic religion is compatible with science. Even the Muslims are encouraged to learn science. Unlike certain religion, science was never considered as satanic works in Islam. For Muslims, it is how you use science that becomes the issue. If you use science for good things, then it is encouraged. But if science is used for bad things (creating atomic bomb etc) then it is not encouraged.
In short, there is no "dark ages" in Islamic history when religion ruled the society.

The chapter in European history wasn't called the Dark Ages so much because religion ruled but because classical learning from the Greeks and Romans was destroyed (or re-tooled for the Church) and centuries of knowledge and learning lost.

Religion does not rule like a dominating dictator. It doesnt rule anything.
"Dark Ages" is a term once used to describe the Middle Ages. The term referred to a supposed lack of learning in the period. Actually, the Middle Ages were not really so "dark." It is important we note that the term "Dark ages" is a derogative term against Catholics. This is a common misconception among Protestants and those who are ignorant of history.

Religion didn't rule, Catholicism did and it kept the people in spiritual darkness which is where the term dark ages comes from. That darkness was lifted with the reformation movement.

The darkish a at the same time as weren't named that by way of church. The darkish a at the same time as began with the fall of Rome, and the starts of the Plague. i'd call it the darkish a at the same time as too, at the same time as 3/4 of the inhabitants are suddenly wiped out, and the infrastructure nd secure practices from raiders that replaced into presented with the help of a important empire falls into disrepair and spoil. The Catholic church actual presented desire to human beings, extremely than conserving them decrease back. i replaced into the single position you need to deliver your little ones to get an education, and understand they'd be presented for, once you need to somewhat help your self! So extremely, at the same time as your irritating about the position your next meal is coming from, and no matter in case your going to die of Plague (It did not basically come with the help of once, it hit numerous circumstances), education will be low on the record of priorities!

It was called the dark ages because Catholicism ruled supreme and they took away the truth from the pople. People were forbidden to read and own Bibles (the light) and true christians who refused to come under the catholic umbrella were persecuted as heretics. This was a dark time for Christianity for what Paul prophesied had come to pass. People were forced to follow the commandments of man and unbiblical creeds and dogmas. However light began to shine once again notably under the Luther revival and these revivals brought forth the protestants who protested and came out of the Catholic Church

I've read before that during that time a meteor hit the earth somewhere and there is a space of unrecorded history, that is where King Arther, fairy's and dragons come from. These tales were meant to fill in the gap in history.
It put ash into the atmosphere blotting out the sun and causing winter during the growing seasons and famine, I'm sure it was a terrible time for mankind just as much as it would be during the present time. They probably literally thought the world was coming to an end.

Because there was very little in the way of scientific or philosophical advancement. The churches of the land ruled through Iron fisted brutality and put to death anyone who dared to prove any scientific theories that went against the religious dogma of the day. All religious conversions were done at the blade of a sword.
