She fears the unknown. Maybe you should just give her time. Once she gets acquainted with all those places, she will know there is nothing to be afraid of.

I think the best way to help your 2 year old daughter is to get her in with other children. Maybe she could go to a daycare or a day home, but one that you feel comfortable with and so does your daughter. Start slowly. Take her to check it out with mom, observe the children for a while and maybe a couple of times. Then leave her for a short period and slowly increase the time. Always say goodbye and don't linger and don't sneak off, the more you want to cuddle and make her feel better the more she wants to be with you. Which is not wrong, but I bet after you leave her she is fine. Eventually she should get more comfortable around people with you being there, if she can feel comfortable without you there and detach yourself from her a little bit. You can also try the same thing with her grandparents. Leave her for half an hour and come back get her. Slowly increase. Has she been shy since she was little or did the behaviour start out of no where? If it just started maybe something else is going on. Try a child psychiatrist or a counsellor (if you are comfortable with that) Sometimes professional help can really open our eyes to a situation. Your family doctor should be able to guide you in the right direction, or help you find some solutions. One more thing there are lot's of great mother/child groups out there that could help her to feel comfortable in public.

Some kids are just shy like that-just a personality trait, however if this behavior continues once she reaches school age and she's not talking really well and exhibits anti-social behavior around her peers, you may want to get her checked for anxiety or autism. Good luck...

Don't worry, she'll grow out of it. Believe me, in about two years you'll wish you had that shy girl back.

sounds like she might have Anthropophobia. a fear of people. you might not think this likely, as she is perfectly normal around you. that's because she has regular daily exposure to you.

Ask the ymca in the event that they do team activities. tell them she is shy and you could like it in the event that they integrated her in team activities. stick to up and verify they are doing it.
