"If you met Buddha on the road, kill him" is the title of a book by Sheldon Koop, a bestseller when it came out, over twenty years ago. The book is still in print. I cannot remember if the phrase was specifically explained in the book. I believe it was meant to convey a particular idea. There is no source of infinite wisdom, only fellow travelers. At best, you meet somebody with more experience in a particular area of knowledge, but otherwise this person is as fallible as you. If you meet somebody claiming infinite wisdom, you are looking at a fraud.

The Buddha that can be met on the road is not the true Buddha. You are not enlightened.

So you recognized the Buddha? Very good. You had a moment of clarity...A moment of awakening.

Why did you not kill him? Clearly you have fallen back to sleep!

to know that it was buddha that you met shows that you are enlightened, for he can appear in many forms. not killing him was just an added bonus for him.

I read that book too.

If you don't know what the title means, it is making a point not to worship/follow people/ideas. Think for yourself.
