In the current time frame and the bias that I see here on Y!A, then I am going to have to say no. I see so many christians asking questions that relate morality to religion. Until they realize that religion is not a prerequisite for morality, no Atheist could campaign a successful presidential bid.

an open atheist?
not likely. Even if its possible why would the person even risk it?
Politicians try to avoid situations where they can lose votes. I am sure that he would rather dodge the question or say he is Agnostic then say he is an Atheist.

No. All governments use religion as 'Prozac' for the people. Presidents are always religious and when they leave office the only time they go to church is when the cameras will be there.

I doubt that very much. The U.S. is notorious for the number of religious fundamentalists who have both powerful political positions and a voter pools that can be steered by those in power as they see fit.

They could, but with so many religious people who do believe in God, I doubt they will ever win an election.

Yes sure. It would be great because he would make unbias decisions. He should be more rationalized. I believe in God but god doesnt have do to anything with religions. Religions were created by men.

At this point, it has not yet been politically expedient, though I can not speak with explicit knowledge of the period between the War of 1812 and the Civil War.

Lincoln was an atheist, so I would say yes. However, a recent University of Minnesota poll says, "not right now". Maybe again in 50 years.
