Check the Codec with "Avicodec". A freeware program.

It will tell you which codecs are used to compress picture and sound data, and also offer links to the website of this specific codec.

I would highly suggest, you *don't* use codec packs like the K-Codec Pack or similar. Especcially if you don't exactly know each codec.

Some codecs won't get along with each other, and other codecs are just for a specific graphics card.

This will some time lead to system crashes.

So, just check your file with AviCodec and get just the codecs you need.

VLC player plays most files, DivX is also a possibility. Windows media player should work for .avi files however. Your problem might be that you don't have the correct CODECS (Compression/Decompression algorithm) installed. You can download K-Lite Codec pack which is a fairly complete set of CODECS. If you're not comfortable messing around with this VLC is probably your best bet.

If media player wont play your AVI you may need a codec. Try the DivX codec here: http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/codec/
