Do they believe that there is no purpose to life? Is it just all passing them by? Why is it so hard to believe that there is a God?

I don't mean to offend. I am simply trying to find some reasoning here. I'm not saying your stupid for not believeing my religion, I'm asking what other people think about life, what happens when you die and so forth.

For the sake of stopping this conversation I am picking a best answer. Although I have to disagree with it. Food for though, if you knew something that helpped you day to day and was incredibly good, wouldn't you want to tell others so others can have that happiness?

Who can say what is truly in another person's heart. Don't miss out on your life wasting time trying to understand something that people themselves often do not understand.
Don't judge...every man has to walk his own walk. At the end of the day, live and die for themselves. What takes place afterwards....let that remain a mystery for the one it concerns.
I have seen an experienced many things in my life, that shaped my views and beliefs. I have no doubts in a Creator, but I would never attempt to convince someone else of anything they did not wish to know. Live and let live

I am an atheist and I believe life has a purpose, just a different purpose than determining our afterlife.
I have no reason to believe anything happens after we die. There are theories about heaven and hell, reincarnation and other forms of an afterlife but nothing suggests those things really exist (unless of course other people's word for it is enough for you). I think they were just thought up by people who couldn't deal with the thought that when we die we just die, cease to exist.
Life is not just passing me by, I'm having a good time and making a difference. Because I believe we only live once and don't have an afterlife I make the most of this life and try to help others enjoy this life too and make the world a better place for future generations. Life is amazing and full of purpose and I think it's sad that some people keep waiting for something better, which they may never get.
I guess it's about as hard for me to believe there is a god as for you to believe there is no god.

1) The same way people with religion can believe that you can spend your entire afterlife in heaven or hell. You are generalising too much to make sense.
2) Who are they? You don't need to believe in an interventionist god to feel you have a purpose.
3) Some people probably do. So what?
4) No, probably not. They experience life more deeply than people who give their minds to someone else can possibly imagine. Take that on faith.
5) It's not hard it's very easy, you just use your common sense. Why is it so hard to appreciate the beauty of a garden without having to believe there are fairies living in it?

Why is it so hard for people to believe that there probably isn't a God?
How can people think that there is an afterlife? These questions go both ways. Not everyone is raised the same and some people are logical thinkers.
Life's purpose is to carry on the species and treat each other with respect.
When we die, our bodies decompose and make other life possible (Eg. grass that feeds animals that feed bigger animals, so on and so forth). Watch the Lion King. It's called the Circle of Life.
Stop making fun of others. It goes against your religion.
I respect your choices and views, now respect mine.

Everyone has defined a purpose for THEIR own life.
As for the universal purpose in life - there isn't one. We are simply here to mate, spawn and die.
I would hope that people create a purpose for themselves. Without such purpose, there's really no reason to live.
But, make the most out of it because it's the only life you have. After it, it's *poof*! Gone.

life is purpose enough. Live life well and if there is an afterlife it's a bonus....if there isn't you will be happy in the end knowing you led a life of few regrets. We do not have a choice over death but we do have a choice of how we live our lives.
Love yourself and be kind to others, you don't live in their skin and you can never know what it is like to do so. Accept others and their choices and they will accept you and yours.

Hey I know for an absolute fact that at the instant of my death enternity occurs....
With the discovery that we are really living in an eleven dimension universe there is a LOT of wiggle room for a hereafter, spirit world, and an infinity of possibilities supporting just about any religious concept.

Our purpose is to survive as long as we can and to procreate. Beyond that simple biological purpose - which is no different than the "purpose" driving any other animal - what meaning one's life has is self-defined.

I'm not religious, and I don't think everything stops when I die. I believe most people who are alive will go on living after I die.

there is ONE verse in the old testament that defines death as being darkness and nothingness.
but i tell jehova witnesses to consider what jesus promised when they quote this verse. jesus said that though a man die and call upon the name of hte lord in hell, he will be saved as though he were alive. some people who do this actually get brought back from death.
