Because they have never worked as a server and they have no clue how s-hitty it is. It is a demeaning, thankless job and people that have never done it before dont' understand that you depend on tips to survive. My fiancee and I both worked as servers in college so we tip 15% for bad service, 20% for ok service, and anwhere from 30-40% if the person is good and really trying to make the effort. You know how some countries make it mandatory to join the military at a certain age? I think it should be mandatory that every person has to work in the food service industry for at least six months just to see how crappy it really is. Everyone would be a much better tipper.

It use to be 10%. Now its 15% and 20% for first class service. But hey it is the customer's prerogative not to tip. You know this before you ever start working.

Why do you think you deserve a tip? Tipping is not mandatory. You get paid an hourly rate and though it isn't very much that is the job you took. Some people are cheap, some dont have alot of money, some inadequate math skills, whatever the reason is though you are not entitled to a tip just for doing your job.

There's no rule to leave anything. Even Rachel Ray only leaves 10% of the amount before taxes. I always leave between 15 and 20%, though, because I worked in the restaurant industry for years.

Some people are just clueless. My mother-in-law took me, my husband and our daughter out to lunch- not an expensive place- the total was something like $36.00, and she left a $2.00 tip. Thank God I checked (being a nosy person!), and I put another $6.00 down. Normally I tend to over tip- usually close to 30-35%, especially if the service was really good. We had a really crappy waiter at this seafood place we went to last week. He never came back to see if we needed anything, or to see if everything was OK- not even once. He was too busy chatting with another customer about real estate prices. Everything we needed- water and bread refills, tartar sauce, etc., etc, was brought to us by the bus boy. I wouldn't have left a dime over 15%, except in most restaurants the wait staff has to split their tips with the bus boys, and since he was the only one who paid one damn bit of attention to our needs, I went ahead and left a much more generous tip than I wanted to. When I was dating if the guy I was out to dinner with left a crummy tip, I never went out with him again- I can't stand cheap people.

Does it ever occur to anyone that some people do not have alot of money to throw around? Maybe they don't go out that often, and have to save their money to dine out. That's what my life is pretty much like most of the time, and some people treat me like crap because of it, and just call me cheap, which is not the case at all. Makes me want to stay home and eat Top Ramen.

LOL, well, if your hollier than thou, i deserve more than a 10% tip shows through in your attitude, i wouldnt leave you anything. If you are so demanding and worthy of more than 10%, I should think you would have a devoute following of customers, scrambling to be in line for your services. Why not try telling your customer up front, "if you arent going to tip more than 10%, please find another server". Honesty and integrity, i think it will work. I chose my line of work, I also choose not to ***** about the people that are providing me with work.

This is sad to say, but my wife has a hard time figuring out how much 15% is. 10% is just much easier. Sometimes places say what 15% is right on the receipt, which is helpful. Maybe you could lobby your boss for this change.

The tipping system is stupid.
Tips are not supposed to be your salary - they are for when you go above and beyond.
