Historically, Yankees is jargon - or rather, derogatory for Northerners (US, that is). So Yankees were the Federation states during the Secession wars, and represented internal enemies that invaded the Southern States (then Confederates).
After that period, the term was taken for extension for any US citizen, and is now used as standard to hint that US foreign politics are a bit too intrusive in other countries.
This is cute:
To foreigners, a Yankee is an American.
To Americans, a Yankee is a Northerner.
To Easterners, a Yankee is a New Englander.
To New Englanders, a Yankee is a Vermonter.
And in Vermont, a Yankee is somebody who eats pie for breakfast.

Where ever they peep their unwanted nose, Yankees are asked to return to their homes. Otherwise on the way they may intrude again in some body's home. Nowhere in the world Yankees are welcome.
