LOL. It depends on what you're looking up or searching for. Your IQ doesn't go down, by the way, unless there's physical damage done to your head, like getting hit or depriving yourself of sleep for an extensively long period of time. However, you can get depression if you're not social enough. And no, webchats don't count. Get outside, find a sport, go out to a movie with a friend or relative. There;s life beyond the virtual world. Go google it.

That's a "depends" answer. And it has nothing to do with adult diapers.

Heighten depression? Dpends on what sites ya go to... You ever go to www.zug.com? or how about www.engrish.com? One of those guys eats soap... and he actually likes a few brands!

And most web sites require some reading by their very nature. Reading enhances one's verbal skills (smileys notwithstanding), and there's ten million libraries worth of information a few keystrokes away at any moment. Sheesh, I wouldn't have aced all those research papers without being able to search out facts as quickly as one can.

And procrastination, in moderation of course, is actually good because it lets you unwind a little. Sometimes, even the most type A among us have to relax, and take in something a little trivial. Like the Presidential race...

It can... activity helps keep depression away, as does natural sunlight, both of which you're not getting if you're in front of your computer! It won't lower your IQ, as long as you're reading educational stuff. In fact, nothing lowers your IQ, it stays the same, barring some sort of brain injury.

For me , it does. Especially since that aimless surfing is accompanied by vast amounts of alcohol. Very easy to explain, when brain synapses are not used, they break. Use it or lose it. Problem for me is that I have too much time to idle away when I am on vacation.

duh...uhhh....what dude?
:)
It is a coping mechanism I think. Its avoidance. It's losing yourself in things other than your problems. We need to do that in order to survive, don't you think?
I don't think it's any different than reading a good book, taking a hot long bath, going to a movie, or watching tv.
