Once you receive the H-1 Approval (I-797), you are legally here as an H-1. Your passport will only have the student visa stamp so you cannot leave and re-enter unless you get a visa stamp for the H-1. If you would like to enter the country (or re-enter) on your new visa, you'll have to go to the Embassy and get an H-1B visa stamp for your passport. The wait time for the Embassy can vary from city to city, but here is the website for it: http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/wait/tempvisitors_wait.php
