The first means you cant show courage by being timid.. Exp- If a house is on fire and you know kids are inside, courage is rushing in and trying to save them. if you are cautious you will think too long and lose the moment....

2nd one is simple, It's a metaphor for living a full life. a 27 yr old who dies but has lived his life on his terms and did the things he enjoyed, like traveling etc and ate things he liked even if not good for him. might have lived a more complete life then a 72 yr old man. who always played it safe, never did the things he truly wanted to and never took any risks.
