i buy my cat's condos and scratching posts at thrift stores. great prices. also check the yard sale ads for pet supplies. humane societies get these donated and may have too many--they'd appreciate a donation for a condo.

Wood would be fine. Coat with rough, cheap carpet on the outside (or find some older carpet along the road someone might be throwing out-ask first!) and maybe something softer on the inside (my cat always loved soft shag-type carpeting). A rope wouldn't work as a scratching post, as cats prefer stability, but the condo itself should work, and a rope might be a fun toy. Good luck!

There are a lot of good kitty trees/condos on ebay, but they cost a lot of money to ship. A good place to start would be Wal-Mart or Target or any other retail store that's not a specialty pet store. They usually have them for under $30.

Hi there...consider searching for some cat trees/condos on your local St. Louis Craigslist. Some people will negotiate the sale price lower or some people just give them away for free too.
Here are some used condos/trees people listed:
http://stlouis.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=cat%20tree
http://stlouis.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=cat%20condo
http://stlouis.craigslist.org/search/pet?query=cat%20tree
Pets: http://stlouis.craigslist.org/pet/
For Sale: http://stlouis.craigslist.org/sss/
People list every minute daily so be sure to check back often and search both the For Sale and Pets section

i wouldnt buy a used one..simply because when a cat scratches the post..they leave their scents from there paws and if you get a used one..your cat will most likely not use it due to the scent of the previous cat. they have decent ones at petco- the one we had for our cats we paid 200 bucks for..but thats a huge one..they have some good smaller ones for around 20 bucks

At the shelter I work in, occasionally we get nice little things like that donated to us that we don't really have a use for so we offer them to the public for a small donation. Check into shelters in your area, maybe they do something similar.

I wouldn't buy a used one. Cats are very strong on smell and picking up on the smell of other cats.

we found a cute cloth kitty house at KMart for $5, it's folded up in a small package and when you open it and shake it, it pops open like a tent, it looks like a cube with a small door on one side
