The Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera) is a member of the Family Arecaceae (palm family). It is the only species in the genus Cocos, and is a large palm, growing to 30 m tall, with pinnate leaves 4-6 m long, pinnae 60-90 cm long; old leaves break away cleanly leaving the trunk smooth. The term coconut refers to the fruit of the coconut palm.

The definition of a nut in the Oxford Concise Dictionary, is a fruit consisting of a hard or leathery shell enclosing edible kernel. A cocoanut certainly has a hard shell and contains an edible kernel (the coconut meat - that white stuff that you can eat) so it qualifies on all counts as a nut. As well, it can germinate a new plant, so you really couldn't call it anything but a nut.

A coconut isn't a nut, despite its nutty name. A nut is an indehiscent, dry fruit containing 1 seed. A coconut is not a nut, but instead is a fleshy fruit called a drupe.

Id say it was a nut, or a seed, at any rate, it can produce a new tree, so it is , like a nut, the fertilized offspring of the coconut palm.

Botanically, a coconut is a simple dry fruit known as a fibrous drupe (not a true nut).

The fruit, 10 in. (25 cm) or more in length, is ovoid and obtusely triangular in cross section. The tough, fibrous outer husk encloses a spherical nut consisting of a hard, bony shell within which is a thin layer of fleshy meat or kernel. The meat is high in oil and protein and, when dried, is the copra of commerce.

No it is a fruit that grows on trees. Peanuts are also not nuts, they are legumes.

Why are you confused. Names don't always make sense. A pineapple isn't an apple and doesn't come from a pine tree. A guinea pig isn't a pig and it doesn't come from Guinea. Don't sweat the small stuff.
