Normally when 2 people marry the Priest says they are married 'until death do you part"
well doesn't that just suck? If you really love your spouse, wouldn't you want to be with them forever?
Well, sealing gives us this option, meaning after death you still have the husband/wife relationship, and also parent/child.
We can be sealed to our parents, each other, etc.
Its a wonderful thing, with families are forever as the focus.

Deirdre: Kobol is a made up name on Battlestar Galactica and it is not a mormon show. Kolob is actually the closest star to God's throne not a play on some name.
rac, twikfat, Pinkadot, tonyamail: Have it right!!
Straightup: you do not have to have an unbroken preisthood chain
todd e: you are right that love keeps people together, even if you are sealed and decide not to live rightously you will not be together. And God would never punish people for no reason. If they do not have the chance on earth to make covenants they will get the chance after death such as your example with the two children dying. They will get their chance! That is why we do sealings for the dead. It IS pro-family we want everyone to be together that wants the opportunityI
Sealings are a sacred not secret act in the temple that binds people together like marriage for eternity. It can be between a husband and wife or children to parents. But the act is more like saying you promise to live worthy, it won't stand the test of time unless you stay true to the promises you made.

Just as Jesus gave his apostles the power to seal in heaven what was sealed on earth, the Mormons believe this similar authority was restored to the Earth and exists in the Mormon Church. With this authority you can be "sealed" to your spouse or family. Essentially what it means is that a link has been created between those sealed, and if they are worthy they will remain sealed for eternity. There must exist an unbroken priesthood chain for anyone to return to live with God. Sorry, maybe not the most simple answer.

The "sealing" is the Mormon form of marriage. The marriage, in the temple is "sealed for time and all eternity". I don't recall an entire family, or children with parents being sealed. From what I remember, this is for married couples. I could be wrong though.
An interesting aside... The TV show "Battlestar Gallactica" in the early '80's was actually a Mormon TV show. In one scene, Apollo and Athena were married. In the TV show, the ceremony declared them "sealed". The show also mentions the "Lords of Kobol". Kobol is the planet that God supposedly lives on. The Osmonds had a record label "Kolob" records, which was a play on this name.
The current version of Battlestar Gallactica retains little of the theological aspects that the first version had.

Sealings occur in the temple. It happens when a man and woman marry each other, they are seal together for time and all eternity. When that couple then have children, their children are "born into the covenant" - they are born being sealed to their parents and any other siblings that are born after the man and woman are married in the temple. For those who converted after having children, then the man and woman are sealed then the children are sealed to them. You may know that we perform work for the dead in the temple. This work allows our kindred dead to decide if they want to be a member of the church or not. If they do, they can choose to accept the ordinences done on their behalf. If they choose not to accept it, then so be it. As for sealing living people to their dead siblings, parents, spouse, it also happens, with someone standing in as proxy for the dead, and the church member ... being themselves. So in your example, I'm assuming the Mother is living and a member of the church, and that her siblings are dead?? Perhaps it's some dear friend or other close member relative of the Mother who stands as proxy for the siblings, then they are sealed together for time and all eternity.
Hope this helps!

Basically "sealed" means a man and wife are eternally married. The LDS male members (worthy ones) hold the Priesthood, which is essentially the authtority to act in God's name. So basically it is like God himself marrying or "sealing" a man and woman's marriage together for all eternity. If a person is not married by this authority, their marriage ends when they die - "til death do you part" as the traditional vow says...
When that couple has children, the children are considered "born under the covenant" which means they are then "sealed" to their mom and dad. The church descibes the family unit as "chain links"...we all need eachother to be 'linked' together to form the family chain.
Hopefully that helps - any others questions - i would love to answer!

I can't tell you what his feelings were but I am a Mormon and when I give a Book of Mormon to someone I do so because I care for them and know that the Book of Mormon is a true book of scripture. The Prophet Joseph Smith “told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.” So, if I were to give you one I would sure think allot of you and yes, religion is a very big part in being happy and in being on the right path that leads us back to our Father in Heaven.

We believe in the sealing powers as given to Peter in the New Testament and to Elijah in the Old Testament. Whatsoever is sealed on earth shall be sealed in Heaven and whatsoever is loosed on earth shall be loosed in Heaven. It is God intent that all of His children should be sealed in an unbroken chain back to Father Adam. For that purpose, we search out our ancestors and perform sealing ordinances in the sacred temples of our faith. This requires the priesthood authority from God to do this work. This authority was restored to Joseph Smith by Peter, James, and John, resurrected/translated apostles from Christ's time. When husband and wife are sealed together, their marriage will be honored in Heaven and is not just for "as long as you both shall live". Likewise, when the children are sealed to their parents, they will be a family realationship in the eternities and not just single ministering angels.
You might ask how that compares with the Lord's teaching that they are neither married, nor given in marriage in the resurrection? That is because marriage is a mortal ordinance, not a spiritual one. Therefore, by performing the marriage vicariously in mortality for our ancestors, they can have the same privilege in the heavens that we have by being married ourselves in the Lord's temples. In the parable, the pharisees did not understand the law because the first son was the eternal husband of the wife who was eventually married to all seven brothers. There was no need to ask the question of whose she was. If they had understood the law, they would have known that she belonged to the first brother.
This is a very important part of our faith, to know that we can be sealed to our families for eternity and become part of the eternal family of Christ through the sealing ordinances.
There is much more to learn about this, but please ponder on this for now.

Being together forever has nothing to do with the lds temple. It is love that keeps people together. If the God they worship makes those who are good non-mormon people not be together because of some ceremony they missed He isn't worth any glory or worship. He is evil! Imagine two young children that die, who love each other, being kept apart because they didn't go to a mormon temple. Wake up and think for yourselves, this isn't pro-family this is sick and wrong!
