Depends on your POV and your believe system. For a Christian it is based in the fact that we are created in the image of God. We are to see God in all persons and serve God in each person. We minster to Jesus when we help our fellowman. We respond to the spark of the Divine in each person. To an Atheist one would see the human being as the highest form of life and give respect to that.
