I understand the ability to have both. In this instance I am asking you to choose between the two.

It's better to be both.

You can't be too caring or independent.

The bad side about being too much of the other is:

1.) Caring - you will spend less time for yourself. You will spoil the person and make him/her more dependent. It will take a toll on your emotional well-being because you will absorb as much negative energies as you can to keep the person happy.
2.) Independent - you will succumb to loneliness and boredom. Relationships for you will not be necessary hence you prefer gaining as many friends as you can. When loneliness sets in you will feel the need for a partner but you are torn because you don't want to depend on someone. There is a greater chance that you rather live by yourself and grow old alone.

Just strike a balance because it will enrich your life more than leaning towards any of the two.

This should not be an "either/or" type of question. Being independent usually means you are your own person, honor yourself and feel comfortable with who you are. Such a person can also be caring. Caring is having feelings of some sort for another. These are not mutually exclusive but mutually supporting concepts.

Independent and caring do not have any conflict? Your are independent and you still can be caring! Usually you need to be independent before you can be caring of others!

I think it will be great if you can be both, but I deem that caring is the priority in a relationship. I think it is okay to depend on one another as long as it is not excessive.
