I'm in the SAME position as you....NEW HDTV and 2 years with Dish Network.....THEY want you to buy the NEW HD-Box for $200.00 AND make you pay $20 a month....

Meanwhile, NEW customers get the Box FREE!!!!!

You can switch satellite companies and get the Box Free...That's the best way to get 23 channels of HD....although you'll only watch one or two.......

You can get an HD-reciever for the local stations....but that's still a $200 investment, and the MAIN channel is HD, not the secondary channels. Grrrr...I want CW in HD!!

The better bet is to go satellite, but go with the competition....

OR if you want a BETTER Direct-TV deal....you may have to turn off your satellite for 4-6 weeks so they call you back and want to give you a better deal to keep you as a customer...Can you wait that long for a phone call???

You can get the HDTV receiver and not subscribe to DirecTV's HDTV packages. You hook it up to a standard TV antenna and you can get your local channels in HD. What kind of antenna you would need depends on where you live and how far away from the broadcast towers you are. Optimally, you'd have a roof top TV antenna. Many work just fine in the attic. Also since most HD stations are UHF you can get a UHF only antenna which are smaller than the VHF/UHF ones.

I'd actually go one step further from not subbing to DirecTV HD and cancel the local stations from DirecTV and save the $6/mo since you'll be getting them in better quality through the HD receiver. The local stations also broadcast subchannels which are extra channels that ride on the same signal. It's like getting an extra dozen channels for free.

You can also consider getting cable rather than Satellite tv...

You certainly shouldn't have to pay $200 for a HD box. I'm with Comcast and just pay a reasonable monthly fee for the HD box and channels

if your direct TV doesn't have the High definition features you might find it hard to get the picture quality your looking for..An HD antenna will bring in a HD signal to your regular HDtv but it wont improve your cable quality. High definition is a differnt signal out put

do no longer worry my pal, i'm going to provide you 2 great techniques, in spite of the undeniable fact that it will require money. a million: purchase Xbox stay Gold for a year that's $60. It saves alot extra money than $10 each and each month. in case you purchase Gold for $10 each and each month, it will upload as much as $a hundred and twenty in a year. Your 2d option could be to purchase a PS3 or Wii, by using fact they do no longer cost Xbox stay Gold.
