YES -- go to the main START button and click on "RUN" -- type in "msconfig" (without the quotes.) This opens the standard Windows XP utility. Choose the tab BOOT.INI , then run the command "Check all boot paths". It should identify the corrupt/removed boot path for Vista so that you can remove it!

you need to get BCDEdit to modify your BCD (Boot Configuration Data), get the paper from the source below, you have the tool with Vista, I quote..
BCDEdit is the only boot configuration editor that can be used to edit the boot configuration for Windows Vista and later versions of Windows. It is included with the Windows Vista distribution in the %WINDIR%\System32 folder. However, BCDEdit can also be used on earlier versions of Windows. Bootcfg.exe is also included with Windows Vista, but it can be used only to edit the boot configuration for earlier versions of Windows that might also be installed on the computer.

The details about how to use it is mostly described there and it's too lengthy to be put around, it requires some skill and understanding of what you're doing as well.

Note about Windows Vista

It should be noted that Vista uses a different way of managing the boot process. There is no longer a text file called boot.ini. Boot information is stored in a Registry-like file called the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store.

you're able to do it. in case you like XP, you may additionally purely wipe the Vista and shipment the XP as a substitute. each and every of the hardware will nonetheless be there, so which you get that benefit. you won't be waiting to do it from a "restoration" disk if the disk is constrained in function. that's in case your disk purely activates records that are placed on your frustratingcontinual, those records are no longer there to be introduced on.
