i think its because a long time ago, parents had to consent to the marriage. they probably asked that so the parents can give any last minute objections. if they said no, the two could not wed. since its tradition, they probably just didnt take it out

There have been cases where somebody stopped a wedding and exposed either the bride or the groom as an already married person who was trying to commit bigamy.
I suppose there would be other things that might stop a wedding. The sheriff might stand up and say, "The groom escaped from prison the other day, and he's under arrest."

It's the law. That's why. You have to give a right for anyone that wants to object to do it before the legal part of the ceremony takes place. There are certain statements that have to be vocalized for a marriage to be officially recognized by government. This is one of them.

the important part is "speak now or forever hold your peace" so it's basicly like if anybody has anything to say do it now because in a minuite it's too late and you'll just have to keep your opinion to yourself.
It's also good for movies when the true love bursts in at that critical moment and objects because he loves her and the groom is a cheating jerk! LOL

I am only guessing here but I would say they give anyone a chance to speak if they know any reason the two people should not be married so they don't waste their time in a marriage that is doomed before it starts.

He is not asking if anyone disapproves of the marriage.
Most priests/ministers use more specific language, such as "if anyone knows of any reason why these two should not be married", or "if anyone knows of any impediment to their union". In other words, does anyone know of a specific problem that means they shouldn't get married. For instance, if one of them is already married.

It's just a tradition. We just go by it because we have nothing to object against it.

they need to ask this just in case someone knows why you two shouldn't be married, like if you are related (brother-sister, cousins, etc, etc) or may be you couldn't be married by the church (Catholic church I mean) if you already had a religious union, which is not allowed.
