There are so many different breeds, but not all the dogs have the same traits. The enviorment and conditioning of a puppy will make a real difference in which puppy is right for you. I strongly suggest meeting the puppy before you pick it. The same with breeds. Meet different dog's of the breeds you like. If you have some in mind, contact a local breeder or ask your vet to refer you to someone they may know who has that breed. Once you spend time with a breed in its home enviorment, you will be better able to judge what is right for you. We have English Bulldogs and Pekingese. I dont always agree with the generalized statements made on the breeds. It is said the bulldogs are not agrressive. I have found, having 3 in my home, that can be very attention aggressive and at tiems food aggressive. They are truly loving and amazing animals, but I would not personally recommend them for small children. I have read that Pekingese tend to be bad for chldren, but I have found it different for us. We 1 Pekingese in the house and I have had a Pekingese the past 14 years. They let the kids lay on them and play with them and actually seem to enjoy the attention. I have never seen signs of aggression. So, you see it is just the difference in each dog. If you are only looking for a puppy to love and not to breed (which I hope is the case), try the link below. You can search your area for the specific breed you want and they are already utd with shots and altering, most are house broke, and all are needing love. There are also personal ads posted on that sight other than rescues. Good luck and please keep me posted!!!

P.S. To get to the pets needing homes from people not shelters you have to clink the link POST CLASSIFIED ADS. It is on the right under second chance book.

** Petfinder also post comments on if the dog/puppy is kid friendly and cat friendly. They are evaluted before you adopt so it takes all the guess work!!!

The best bet would be for you to take the family with you to pick out a dog or puppy. The problem with puppy's is that you don't know what their temperament will be like when they get older and they go through the chewing stage and need to be potty trained. You could look into a well trained dog. It may make you and the family happy. Looking at a puppy make sure you all agree on it and have patience for it.

Steer clear of toy breeds. The kids and the cats can hurt them without meaning to.

I'd say anything medium to large would work. Anywhere from a beagle to a lab. I'm partial to adopting older shelter dogs, because you don't have to do the puppy phase, and they're so grateful to be in a home that I really think they're easier to train.

When you meet the right dog, you'll know it. :)

More than likely people will tell you the breed of dog you should get based on the breeds they like or are familiar with.

What you really need to do is go to your local humane society or any local dog specialists you know and do a bit of research.

Ask them what kind of dog would meet your specifications, reasearch the dogs they mention at a library or online and decide if that is what is right for you.

I think a springer spaniel is the perfect dog for a family with kids. I have an 8 yr old springer. He gets along fine with the cats and the kids. He is gentle, loyal and very loving. The best dog I have ever had. It is all in how you treat and raise the dog once you get him/her. A dog that is loved will love back.

I live on a farm and I have German shepards they are very Nice and LOVE kids but they shed and have to be bathed outside because they have a lot of hair

I have also had a min pin and he was the best dog so nice loved everyone they are small "travel sized" and don't have a lot of hair mine liked water so about every few days I'd just put him in the shower with me and bathe him that way

my grandmother has a poodle who has alot of energy and loves to play loves kids poodles come in different colors and sizes from Small to greyhound sized they are the best for ppl with allergys because they don't shed but they have to go to the grromer for a haircut etc.

If anyone you know is breeding retriever pups, especially Goldens or Labs, get them to give you the 'runt'. Goldens and Labs are even tempered, LOVE kids and are very tolerant and will make loyal friends that get along with (or leave alone) any other pets in the house. The females are best for little children as they aren't as boisterous as the boys.

dont get any form of terrier they are going to be psychological with the cats, the main chilled and kinfolk dogs is the cocker spaniel. it particularly is going to be friendly to the cats and wont harm a fly and it wont pull on the lead like some labs and beagles. i artwork with canines. good luck
