An alkali metal. You find it in group I on the periodic table of the elements. It's a whitish silvery soft metal that you can cut with a butter knife (theoretically) It is rarely found in the free state on Earth.
Along with sodium and chlorides, it is an important electrolyte in the body. A deficiency in potassium causes muscle cramps and heart arrhythmia. It's found in sports drinks and bananas.
