When you die, endorphins are released in the brain as compensation for the cells that are dying from lack of oxygen. These endorphins cause nerve cells in the brains to fire off repeatedly, so all of your memories are regurgitated and you see lights or a tunnel of light from the sensation. Uneventful death, meaning dying nonviolently, is quite peaceful. Your brain and a little bit of God assists you in the process.

Our spiritual matter is supposed to consist of a very fine material that cannot be destroyed and is like light. Those who have seen messengers from heaven say they are very bright - brighter than the sun, yet you can gaze upon them because the light is not harsh or "worldly" for lack of a better term. I supposed that when we die and begin to enter the spirit world, it will be full of spirits and therefore, full of light.

I experienced the same thing...but i am still alive today, thanks to God, and when i experienced it, i wasn' t really dying or some sort of struggle....
but i think that the light people see can be "angelic" in occurence...good or bad? needs some more investigating.
While it is true that God has this irreproachable light when He appeared to one of the Apostles in the Scripture, but i also think that the devil has his resource and is very cunning and resourceful when it comes to those who are perishing because they don't love the Truth.

The oxygen is being depleted in the brain, and it's the visual image of the oxygen leaving the brain. Also the tunnel effect, a feeling of going through a tunnel before death, is for the same reason.

Many physicians and researchers believe that it's one of the effects of anoxia/hypoxia on the brain and the optic nerves.
Near "clinical death" has been duplicated and the phenomenon has been documented repeatedly.
I don't believe that heaven is the lightshow as death sets in. I believe that it's where the soul goes AFTER death.

It's a brain thing. Ever see those lights when your eyes are closed, particularly if you are rubbing them? While maybe not quite the same phenomena with the eye pressure, still shows it is possible to "see" stuff like that...

This happened to a good friend of mine who almost died in a car accident. She "saw the light". But she isn't religious. Her doctor things it is the brain cells dying, randomly "firing" as they begin to stop due to lack of oxygen.
But almost every major religion reports it as well. I hope that I get to see it someday, also! :)

Let me tell you this...
My mother died of cancer in 2003. She renewed her faith in Catholicism before she died. Do you know why she did it? I do.
She was afraid. She saw death staring her in the face and she was terrified. So she was desperate for some kind of comfort.
I think that the church preying on her weakness and I resent it.
Thats why people "see the light". Fear can do amazing things.

People see what ever it is that they are taught in their religion they would see. It seems that people who are about to die become hopeful for the things they are taught to hope for. Hallucinations in such a stressful moment are entirely plausible.

They see one bright light which is the effect of tunnel vision that we all get as we lose oxygen to our brain.
Test pilots who black-out see this light all the time.
