I think the Battle of Salamis is the most influential battle in Western Civilization...see the following wikiarticle about it....there are all sorts of stats and strategies you're looking for:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Salamis
Moreover, were it not for the Greek defeat of the Persian army, we would not be enjoying all the luxuries our beloved country owes to the Greeks and Romans, because the Persians would have conquered everything and out society would resemble much of the Middle East, I daresay, were it not for this tremendous victory. I'm a little fuzzy on the details, but there's another Roman battle in which a man (can't remember the name) sat up on a cliff to watch a sea battle, and pretty much watched his huge ships get clobbered by some smaller, less prepared army. Great stuff! Look up Hannibal as well. Ah, there was another equally influential battle of the Spanish Armada in which their ships got lost in a storm...and that is why Spain is no longer a primary world power. Fascinating....good luck!

The simple answer is the one that wins. Study Friedrich the Great, he was the father of the modern army, Wellington, after all he beat Nappy, Geronimo, he and a hand full of men led the entire US army a merry chase for years. Patton who pulled off the impossible at the Battle of the Bulge and Aurthur Currie who rewrote the book on infantry tactics and opened the flood gates of military thought that led to blitzkrieg.

There are only two that are the necessary and best strategies in war.
War is "the active use of all means to cause opponents of your state to be unable to continue harming you and yours".
The first grand strategy says, "Be their firs test with the mostest".
Equally led, equally equipped and armed, any sufficiently superior concentration of troops, firepower, means of swift transport intelligence and status information gathering guarantees that in any otherwise equal context in the field, what will decide it is speed, firepower, troop numbers, etc.
The second is called "tactics of mistake". If you can get your enemy to waste his energy and his means, put his soldiers in the wrong place, concentrate them so you can attack them
and have them misunderstand your plans or have to squander energy seeking you where you are not located/operating.

Alexander the Great was a great tactician.
If I were you I would look into the ancient battles that were fought.
Some of those tactics were amazing as they did everything on horseback or on foot.
The way he would split superior numbered forces is complete and utter genius.

I remember this from history class. I don't remember specifically and who and where this was. But I can give you the general idea. One army thought this other army would be below this hill to fight. So they took advantage of this assumption and went to the top of the hill to fight instead. I think this was an early American Battle.
OH and you can't forget Napoleon and the Russians. The Russians beat his *** with their homeland's natural forces. Napoleon's army didn't see the icy and harsh Russian winter at all and got defeated. That's all I could remember. I think the Napoleon one trumps the first.

Do not attack your opponent head on, peel him like a grape. Attack from the flanks.
Do not attempt to hold territory, withdraw before him and attack where you have the advantage.
Cut off his line of supply.
Deny your opponent the use of your resources, if you can't take it with you destroy it.
