It is really long so I`ll send you a link that can explain about what is said in the old and new testament. It is in there but you also must take many issues into consideration as well. Please read the link I left and I`m sure you will understand. Here is where it is..
Heb 7:1-2 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham as he was returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, to whom also Abraham apportioned a tenth part of all the spoils was first of all, by the translation of his name king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem, which is king of peace. You are right. There should be a freedom of how much you give. Remember also the poor widow who gave two pennies, which was more than the large amounts of gold given by rich people to the Temple. This implies a freedom of judging how much you can and will give. 10% may work for administrative purposes, but steals from people the reward for a good deed: giving freely money for the sake of God.

The best I could see is Hebrews 7. I would argue that if Melchizedek got 10 percent and was a likeness of Christ, we being a follower of Christ should give Him 10 percent as well. Or I would tell you to not be so damn cheap and that if you are not giving at least 10 percent your a failure. Pick which ever one you like best.

Tithing was part of the Mosaic Law.
We are no longer under that law as shown below.
Giving depends on the situation of each person of family.
Just at he widow dropped in two lepta........which are worth about a half a cent.......in the eyes of Christ she gave all she had.
"Now a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins, which have very little value. 43 So he called his disciples to him and said to them: “Truly I say to YOU that this poor widow dropped in more than all those dropping money into the treasury chests; 44 for they all dropped in out of their surplus, but she, out of her want, dropped in all of what she had, her whole living.” Mark 12:42-44
"He kindly forgave us all our trespasses and blotted out the handwritten document against us, which consisted of decrees and which was in opposition to us; and He has taken it out of the way by nailing it to the torture stake." Colassians 2:13-14
"For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God; but not according to accurate knowledge; 3 for, because of not knowing the righteousness of God but seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the Law, so that everyone exercising faith may have righteousness." Romans 10:2-4

In the Book of Malacai, excuse the spelling. Which is within the old testament, there is no new law within the new testament.
