Judaism was born in 1900 BCE and Islam in 622 CE. Because of the fact that Judaism is 2,522 years older than Islam and that the name of "Jerusalem" is mentioned thousands of times in Hebrew scriptures, hundreds of times in daily prayers and thoughts, both in the direct form of Jerusalem and its many names, and in Islam, where the word "Jerusalem" is never really mentioned in the Quran, except as a few times as "Al Quds", or holy city, and considering the fact that Judaism has only one city where the two ancient temples existed and Jewish history was made and Jerusalem was the spot where Muhammed supposedly arouse in the myths, to heaven on a winged horse with a women's face (al-buraq), and that Islam considers Jerusalem only its 3rd holiest city (how many cities should a religion have honestly?), WHO REALLY OWNS THE CITY, Judaism or Islam? (not Christianity, who has some claim on it though), I mean total claim?

I think it should belong to the Jews. Islam moves in and tries to take over by force, what is not theirs to take.

In the Torah there are several times that G-d makes a promise to the Israelites. To Abraham He promises a land. In the books of Exodus through to Deut. G-d expands on that promise. The land is divided up into the regions that represent the twelve tribes. However G-d makes it clear that the land is HIS land. These are the two caveats for them to maintain "ownership" of Israel.

a) that they must show kindness to the poor and widows and strangers in the land, and
b) that they must take care of the Levites

In the books of history (ie Joshua - IIChron.) we see how this was played out. We can see that as the people of Israel forgot those two points and the result was that ten of the twelve tribes were lost and Judah was finally taken into captivity.

In 1948 a new nation of Israel was brought into existance. However, the promise of G-d was an eternal one.

Whether the Jews or those that practice Islam are in Jerusalem, there will be peace only when the people of Israel remember and then practice those two caveats that I mentioned above.

Hope this helps

God bless

As a supposed Jew (just because my mommy says I'm Jewish doesn't actually mean it's true), I would like to add my own two cents and suggest that the city "belongs":

1) To the people who were actually living there for at least 1,500 years, growing their olive trees and what-not, and who were, unfortunately colonized by the British and named, for purely geo-political reasons, Palestinians. Most, but not all, happened to be Muslim. Unbeknownst to many, there were quite a few Jews and Christians living there as well, and in relative harmony, too. Of course, we've conveniently forgotten this. Furthermore:

2) International law, which Israel and the US don't view as applicable to them but which the US helped draft and applies to others (except Israel), stipulates that individuals are free to move about, for asylum or any other reasons, from point A to point B, whenever the situation arises where such moving is a matter of life and death. What it does not stipulate is that Palestinians pay for German, French, Polish, Russian, English, and American crimes. It also does not stipulate that, should Palestinians refuse to simply bend over and take it up their collectives asses, that Israel is free to ethnically cleanse the region, kill, torture, maim, and rape all in it's path, steal as much land as humanly possible, install an apartheid regime (and I DON'T need Jimmy Carter t tell me that to know it's true), amass the second deadliest armed forces in the world, and play the victim, as if the Jewish Holocaust (there are others, you know, just ask the Chinese or the Iraqis) is an excuse to do as one pleases.

Anyone that uses religious texts as a basis for ownership must be ignored, if only because it's so childish and ignorant. Moreover, Judaism only came about after Christianity, when the Hebrews got sort of pissy about this band of loons going around worshipping some commie revolutionary and felt a need to make themselves more visible. Also worth remembering is that the Hebrew god told Jews to WAIT to be taken to the promised land, not murder hundreds of thousands of people, put close to a million in exile, and just take the whole damn thing.

In the end, Judaism, Islam, Christianity, it's all nonsense, no different than second-graders who form "gangs" to beat up on first-graders "just because".

GROW THE F**K UP, PEOPLE.

Why not Christianity? From my standpoint, Jerusalem is a Christian sacred place (city) and I find it annoying that going there is dangerous because other people are fighting over it.

Otherwise, I'm pretty certain there will be quarrels and fights over Jerusalem until the end of times.

Jerusalem originally was a Canaanite town that worshiped El And Baal and the Canaanite equivalent of Venus. Maybe they should have property rights over it.

In the bible who does God says the promise was for? Hint: read Genesis especially about Abraham and Isaac and all the way to Moses it is actually pretty cool how the story goes. The bible is a big love story book from God to man.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Jerusalem is located in Israel and therefore it belongs to the Israelis and not to any specific religious group.

Jews have a strong attachment to the city and I hope that Israel will continue to welcome Jews into their free society just as they welcome the Christians and Muslims and and all the world. I can only hope that Israel will be very cautious about their own safety and security... terrorism is a nasty beast.
