Halloween started out as Samhain. Pronounced (Sow Ween) Samhain is celebrated in many different forms around the world. Some call it different things, but all the holidays center around the theme of honoring the dead. When the Christians overtook Europe. that Pope decided it would be a good idea to put a holiday called All Saints Day on Samhain(Nov 1st) The day before was called All Hallows Eve or Halloween. Samhain ceremonies started at dusk on Oct 31st.

It started with tribes that picked one day a year, everybody dressed up in mask and had a festival ,eat, dance to ward off evil spirits so that they would have a good crop for the next year. This was called All Hallows Eve. Somewhere down the line things changed and it became the thing we know today as halloween, which is far from any celebration to ward of evil spirits!

Briefly, Halloween is All Hallows Eve. The Eve before All Hallows day, or what we now call All Saints day. This has been answered before. Search the back post.

hallow'een is actually all hallow's eve meaning the one night a year for all ghosts and spooks to freely roam about, and november 1 is all saints day in which people would pray to the saints to guide all the spooks to heaven. so the idea was that come november 1 all the dead are settled and people will no longer be haunted

The christians stole Samhain and called it Halloween and invented some dipturd named Jack who walks around with a mutilated pumpkin, or Jack-o-lantern (Jack's Lantern)...

The original meaning I'm not familiar with. But, it's originally Pagan, just like every other holiday.
