"Cardio" is "Heart". Basically it's any exercise that gets your heart pumping, like running, swimming, or dancing.

Cardio is short for cardiovascular. Things that really get your heart pumping (aerobics). Weight lifting would NOT be an example. While it strengthens muscles, it does not necessarily work the heart.

Cardio is the medical term used to reference the heart. From Greek kardia: heart. It is also used in reference to exercises and or equipment intended for cardiovascular fitness and endurance training, like aerobic exersizes.
