Carcinogens are anything that can contribute to the formation of cancer. Common examples are chemicals, asbestos, alcohol and, radioactivity. Carcinogens can be further classifed as a mutagen or non-mutagen. Mutagens have high potential to damage DNA. Therefore, introduce genetic flaws which initiate or contribute to cancer initiation. Alcohol and asbestos are non-mutagenic carcinogens. They do not alter DNA. However, they cause cell death. As a reaction, the body regenerates cells for the lost cells. Anytime, cells divide it is an opportune time to introduce a mutation.
Intake of carcinogens increases cancer risk. There is no guarantee that anyone will get cancer. In addition, if cancer forms, many cases can be treated. It's all about risk. For example, driving 30mph over the speed limit does not gurantee an accident but, the risk is much higher. People should limit their exposure to carcinogens.
There is no way to totally avoid carcinogens. They are in both the air and water (as well as food, sunlight, TV, etc.). As I mentioned early, the best thing to do is limit your exposure.

cacinogens are things that have been proven to be cancer causing agents. While some can be extremely toxic, others are worse in large quantities over longer amounts of time. All in all, stay away from them. Merry Christmas.
