The "Are all nuns virgins" question kinda prompted this. But, seriously does one have to be a virgin to be a nun? And if so, how do they know? Do they do an examination? That really wouldn't be accurate, seeing as how a tampon can break the hymen. Or do they just have to take an oath of celibacy?

You don't have to be a virgin to become a nun, and as far as I know there is no medical exam involved. Often widows become nuns and you know they are not virgins. You do, however, have to take an oath of celibacy once you're in the convent. The three traditional vows are poverty chastity and obedience.

No you do not have to be a virgin to be a nun.
There are many nuns who joined after being married and widowed etc.
There are many nuns who've had sex and still became nuns.
If you have your hymen broken by a tampon, lol, that does not qualify as sex/intercourse. lol You are still a virgin even if by default.
Yes they do have to take an oath of celibacy but that doesn't make them a virgin either. I'm not sure if that is what you were getting at but the way the question was worded it almost seemed so.

A woman does not have to be a virgin to become a nun. Some women have become nuns after their husbands died. But a never married woman who is not a virgin can still become a nun if she meets all other requirements.
