im going in 4 days to get impressions, before i get my braces off so they can mold my retainer. and i am soo nervous because i hate with a passion those impressions.. how come my apppointment is 45 miuntes long just to get impressions? or is that genereally how long it takes?

I actually just got this done about a week ago, got my braces off! Yay! If you have some sensitive teeth, then taking off the braces might hurt a little on those teeth, and even that isn't THAT bad, but on normal teeth, it doesn't hurt at all. For the impressions, you're gonna feel a little weird having your braces off, and the impression is completely painless. The impression can be a little uncomfortable, as they put a glob of goo-type substance on the roof of your mouth until it becomes firm into an impression. You won't have any trouble breathing. It takes about 2 minutes to become firm, it helps if you breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, and nothing is left in your mouth after, assuming you rinse once or twice to get the excess "goo" out after the impression is taken.

Most orthodontists will remove your braces BEFORE taking impressions for a retainer. It takes time to remove the braces and cement used to hold them on as well as to smooth the teeth after. The impressions are then taken, and you will probably have to return several days later to pick up your retainers. If the orthodontist does not have an in-house lab, the impressions need to be sent out to have the retainers made. I hope all goes well!

From what I remember from having braces which was like 10 years ago, it didn't take that long. But, I know I hated impression because the trays have those handles on them and they stick down your throat and make you wanna throw up. God bless!

I'M SURE THEY WILL REMOVE THE HARDWARE FIRST BEFORE THE IMPRESSIONS FOR THE MODELS FOR THE RETAINERS ARE TAKEN. IF NOT, IT WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE TO REMOVE THE IMPRESSION AS THE IMPRESSION TRAYS WILL BE LOCKED IN THE MOUTH.
