That atheistic morality is so very different from religious morality.
Most religious people use reasoned judgment to reach personal moral decisions, just like atheists. Only those who are fundamentalist cast unreasonable judgments.
That's why gay people can get along well with Christian family members who have come to agree that the Church is mistaken about the rejection of gay people.

Probably what is most misundertood, even by those that 'claim' to be Atheists is what exact is the belief, the basis or the history behind the belief. Do Atheists believe in a higher power or just in their own power?
It is probably easier to Christians to comprehend Atheism and visa versa other than Hindu's or Eastern religions to understand Atheism or Christianity.
Many proclaimed Atheists are on a bandwagon and don't really know the basis for their belief.

I'm not Atheist, however my perception is the most misunderstood aspect is that people think they choose to be Atheist because they want to live their lives imorrally. Atheists live their lives morally because it's the right thing to do, not because of the threat of punishment or for reward. Most who do not understand the Atheist deny them the right to choose their beliefs and they fail to acknowledge that they are true to themselves. That is a right everyone deserves and is being "denied" to the Atheist.
