It would appear that other than the, perhaps, similarity of the name, there's in common there.
This is what Wikipedia has to say:
Mariamman (Tamil: மாரியம்மன்) also Maariamma (Tamil: மாரியம்மா) or simply Amman (Tamil: அம்மன்) or mother is the rural South Indian mother goddess predominant in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. It is closely associated with goddess Parvathi and Durga, though its origin is believed to be Proto Dravidian.
There are various versions on the origin of Mariamman. She basically is a rain goddess, mari-rain(Tamil)amma-mother. Another version suggests that she is the mother of Parasurama, Renukadevi who is appeased for rains.
She is usually portrayed with a red-hued face, and cures all summer heat-based diseases like pox and rashes. In many rural shrines, she has no form - just a granite stone with a sharp tip, almost like a spear head. She is adorned with garlands made of limes.
People also pray for progeny, a good spouse, et cetera. The most favoured offering is "pongal", a mix of rice and green gram, cooked mostly in the temple complex itself, on firewood.
Hope this helped.
Merry Christmas!!!!

Jesus mother is Mary (Greek) or Mariam (Hebrew). The name means bitter.
Mari Amman, not Mariam, is a goddess in many religions.
Even if the name looks the same, one deals with a Jew women and the other deals with an immortal.

If you look at a lot of religions they are all related. The names and the practices may be different but there are things that are essentially the same. So the Mari that you talk about could be the equivalent of the Mary that we know.

It is quite possible that one religion took the idea off the other. This is because all religions are interconnected in some way. Eg. Christmas was originally a pagan celebration, but Christians took it on. By adapting things from other religions it makes it easier for people to swap.

I like that Christianity was the first and only religion. I'm sure you mean your own label of Christianity. Hooray for big brains!

Hindu's copied and tried to confuse people just like every other religion. Christianity was the first and only religion and any after it are imitations.
