If you check your laptop, it will probably be destroyed or missing when you reach your destination. Airlines aren't responsible for electronic devices and all bags are searched. Baggage handlers aren't all that careful either.
You need to carry your laptop on board if you want to ensure that it will work later, but you at least need enough juice in the battery to turn it on and show the TSA that it isn't a bomb. Somehow, turning it on means that a laptop couldn't possibly be a bomb.

absolutely - you will just need to take them out of their bag at security. Some places may have you turn them on for them but taking them on the plane is not an issue at all. I've done tons of travel around the world for my site www.bombasticlife.com and never had any issue taking my laptop with me.

Yes. Now you can take one carry on, plus one personal item (purse or laptop). Check your airlines website to be double sure. FYI - British Air is always weirder than other airlines about restrictions.

Yes you can. I did this in October and it was fine. All you have to do is take it out of the bag and put it on the conveyor belt.
