I'll be 18 in over a year, but I am in 'good' physical shape. I wasn't born in the U.S.A, but I do believe we should fight to preserve this great nation... I do not like war, I hate war... I feel the only time we should enstate a draft is if we get invaded, not to fight an 'undeclared and illegal' war in Iraq.

Here's a fun fact!!! real..fun! If the U.S. pulls out of Iraq... and a 'civil war' does erupt... THe Sunni's in Saudi Arabia and other Sunni nations would step in and the entire middle east would come undone. Pretty cool, I mean... pathetic, and sad and amusing that an entire region can be that stupid and divided by religion. On second thought we should just leave and let them fight eachother off until they all die! then we move it and conquer what's left... Make a few new states out the deal. Wow! Middle Eastern people are stupider than I thought. Hmmm....

Oh yeah, I believe that Americans are way too spoiled and weak. As a native to Brazil, I find that Americans have a lot of blessings, but there shouldn't have to be a pointless draft... Iraq isn't invading us.

When I say Americans are weak.. I mean whiney. I was at school the other day and soem girl was complaining because her sandwich was bumped by her orange in her lunch sack. I glared at her as she was about to throw it away. I stared at her and stated, "In a third world country" like Brazil "People eat food that isn't clean and they still eat it... and you are tossing a perfectly good sandwich because the bread isn't even flat." She smirked and said, " It's just a sandwich. And plus this is America, and we'll never starve, and this country will always have food." lame.

I think a draft would be wonderful. People around here are too soft.
Want an example? go into a room of people and ask them to raise their hands if they will go to war.
There ya go. Who will fight for us? Those one or two who did raise their hands? The military will instill discipline on many people. To say the least, the crime rate would go down dramaticaly. Secondly, the country would never be in trouble because all citizens know how to fight.

I have mixed feelings on the draft. I remember the draft during the Vietnam Era. The problem with the draft is that it lowers the education and physical fitness standards of the military. At this time, our military has some of the most educated people it has ever had. The draft would change that. On the other hand, I think Israel has a good idea that all of its citizens serve a certain amount of time in the military. I believe that there would be less whining about what a person doesn't have after having to serve in a 3rd world country for a while.
thumpy: that would only work if the Drill Sgt.'s are able to do what they do best and don't have to tip-toe around the PC police...

I assume you are talking about the bill in congress. I like the idea. I would teach the youth of this nation some respect, which is severely lacking these days. Conscripts would probably never see combat. The enlisted men and women that want to fight would fight and the rest would handle everything else, and get taught a lot of moral and ethical values at the same time. What people don't realize is this would really be more like an extension of school without all the crap being taught to them. And besides, think any congressman would vote for a war if their own children might get sent? Not very likely.

No. The simplest feasible justification for the draft could be countrywide security. But that are meant to simplest be below extenuating occasions. The concept that residents will have to compelled to spend time within the navy is not approximately countrywide security. It's approximately social engineering, i.e. utilizing the navy to drive men and women to comply to a detailed mind-set. If a draft was once used for nonmilitary causes it could be regarded socialism or statism. I'm no longer an absolute libertarian, but when there are any limits to state vigour over men and women's lives it will have to be the draft. Taxation and motor cycle helmet legislation are minor nusianse in comparison with being compelled to spend time within the navy. If the federal government can take "imminant area" over younger men and women with a purpose to instill them with militaristic values then what is to not quit the federal government from taking "forthcoming area" over men and women for different causes? If this sounds a long way fetched appear up the Buck v. Bell determination. In the Twenties US Supreme Court stated the navy draft as justification for involuntary sterilization. If the federal government had the vigour to drive men and women into the navy for the usual well, Justice Oliver Wendall Holmes reasoned that it additionally had the vigour to sterlize men and women.

I think the military should be voluntary.. I'm an Army wife so I support the military and at the same time I have a 4 year old little girl and I think it should be her choice what she does as an adult. I don't want to think of her in a position she does not want to be in or to think that the government would force her to war when she has children. Not to mention people with certain power, whether it be money or influence, will find some way to keep their children out of the draft. Another thing... if you force some one to join the military their hearts are not going to be in it and they will not do their jobs well and put every one working with them at risk.

So long as the number of volunteers stays high there is no need for a draft. My son signed by in the Army 10 days after he turned 18. e had to wait for 3 mo. to go to boot camp because they where all full. He has a friend who signed up about 6 mo. ago and is going through Ranger training. He had to wait 2 mo. for a slot to open in boot camp and another 6 for Ranger school. When we went to his graduation there were 250 guys graduating. If a draft where instigated today the military would have to open new bases to train them all.
If you really want to serve this country the military has a program that you can earn your citizenship by serving in any branch of the military for 6 years. At the end of your enlistment you will not only be a US Citizen you will have all the privileges and benefits of a veteran.

I don't think it will happen anytime soon, but I would be against it. Conscription whether for the military or for national service is one of most egregious civil liberties violations imaginable. It amazes that people who complain about gun registration, smoking ordinances, seat belt laws, taxation, and mininum wage laws as government intrusion can favor conscription. I'm hardly an absolute libertarian but there are limits on state power over people's lives conscription should be one of the big ones.
Conscription is nationalizing human bodies. Why is that so many Americans advocate doing with a 19 year old kid what they wouldn't advocate doing to a factory?

You told us your age in your Q. But if you hadn't, I'd have guessed correctly... about 16 years old. With age comes experience. And with experience comes perspective. Perspective is a wonderful thing.
Hitler marched through Europe with very little organized resistance. Many of those countries he occupied were not inclined to draft an army and fight in an "undeclared war" (until it was too late). For the most part, they were liberated by American draftees fighting for something bigger than just the protection of American soil.
When you grow up, you'll know a lot more about the world around you. And you'll know a lot more about how difficult life can be when you decide it's your job to criticize and pass judgment over those around you.
God gave you two eyes, two ears and only one mouth. There's a reason for that!

Yes there should be a draft. However unlike other past drafts every male as soon as they graduation high school should serve NO exception. This way congress will not be able to get their children and grandchildren out of it. So with their own kids in the military they will send them into war only if it's absolutely necessary.
As for going to war if only we are attacked. That's fine however should we have all the people trained as possible if that happens. A draft would ensure we have all the people necessary if we were to be attack.

I think there may be a compromise draft where you would be inducted into the service for 2 years but not be shipped overseas. The 2 largest priorities would be to fill out the National Guard that because of Iraq is not at full strength, and to assist in patrolling the boarder.
As much as we can't have another 9-11, we also can't have another post-Katrina. Not to mention another 10 million illegals.

Well Asker you are SOL....every USA since the War of 1812 has had a DRAFT....including WW1, WW2(in fact a draft after in PEACE to boster the ARMY), Korea, Vietnam. Only since Vietnam has USA not had a draft to military service.
Personnally I think USA should have a draft. Give this people who whine and complain here on YA a chance to taste "FEAR" anyone can hide behind a keyboard but a real person gets out and makes a change.
The war in IRAQ is not Illegal(do not believe all Media do some I-Net research)
The WAR was declared by CONGRESS after seeing the evidence all of the world agreed on!!!
WI_SAINT:
Please you got to be kidding me right?? 10 year data. Fine if that is what was used. Has America got rid of its Nukes?, its Biological weapons, etc etc. Highly doubtful. Do you think the CDC stores certain viruses and bacterium to just look at under a microscope???
So, Why would Saddam not still have his sitting around? Gassed the Kurds in the 80's. FACT...America nuked Japan 1946 FACT. America made Nuclear Weapons before Nuclear Power. FACT.
This war is not about OIL for 1. Seriously, America pulls less than 3% of its oil from Iraq and the Middle East. Only 3%..
We captured the oil areas in the opening of the war. But, to keep the evronimental issues the 1st gulf war from happening.
If it is about oil and the Southern parts of Iraq are supposedly stable. Then why arent American Tankers lined up and getting FREE oil. Afterall the occupying Country gets that country's spoils, right?? Where is the oil??
