we will be driving from kansas to california. i always end up forgetting stuff, so what would you bring? obviously we have lots of toys and snacks and diapers of course, but what are some other good things to bring?

I love all the previous answers... DVD player, toys, things to baby proof hotel rooms, etc. The only specific toy I can think of that kept my little ones busy forever was a Magna Doodle. There will be lots of unexpected messes so wet wipes, paper towels, Ziplock baggies of different sizes, and a hand vacuum are great to have. Also, be willing to ride in the back seat next to your child and play, read, or watch movies. I try to remember that they need to be comfortable while traveling, so no fussy clothes. If your child is into "pacy"s then bring hundreds!! We always lose some in between the seats or somewhere and it helps when you're on the road to just be able to pull out a new one instead of trying to dig around and find the missing one...and then see if it's clean enough still lol. We also bring multiple sippy cup/bottles because sometimes you just can't stop and wash them out and no one wants to mix milk and grape juice flavors. Another trick we try is hiding most of the toys where our daughter can't see them...so she's interested in them when she gets tired of the toy she's playing with to begin with. We also never travel without children's tylenol/motrin. The one time we didn't take it my daughter came down with a horrible fever and we were staying 30 minutes from the nearest place to get some and had no knowledge of the area. Daddy ended up having to go out to get it at 11pm and barely anywhere was open. Take anything that you couldn't live with out if you get stranded somewhere. And then hope you don't need any of it. I have family in Texas. We make the trip at least once a year from Mississippi which is around eight hours... You should bring everything! That's what I did. almost all of her toys. We packed a cooler with her favorite drinks and food. Remember rest areas are good for letting the child out to run walk or play. They get bored with sitting in the carseat, and it can get uncomfortable. I hope this helps.
Oh and yes like the answer above bring a portable dvd player and lots of movies.

Well before a long road trip we got our son this mirror that had lights on it. A light from behind each animal would light up one at a time and it would play music. It kept him entertained even up until we lost the remote for it (about 2 yrs). Or there are projection things from fisher price that you can buy the project scenes on the roof of your car that play music also. This is also good when driving at night.
Also bring bottled water, Sippy cups, antibacterial foam/wipes for your hands, some medicine (if your little one gets sick while on the road its alot cheaper to bring your own than buying it) , first-aid kit,

#1 a BIG vehicle. We took my daughter from Missouri to Florida when she was a year old, and we're doing it again in a few days (she's 3 now). It's a lot of fun.
You'll need:
favorite toys
books (I got in the back seat at times and read to her)
a portable crib
first aid kit
something to snack on besides crackers, bring veggies and fruits too.
basically you need the same stuff you'd take on a trip across town, just more of it.
Also you can bring masking tape to close off power outlets and temporarily "baby proof" the place where you're staying.

There are some great lists on here, but I would add CD's that tell stories and sing songs. Also, plan on adding some time to pull over at rest stops or "lookouts" to let your one year old get out of the car and burn off some energy (bring a ball or "outside" toy to play with). Good luck!

I wish I would have asked this question before going on a trip with my 2 yo daughter. :) Obviously basics like diapers, wipes, food, etc. Other than that, I would bring books, toys, cds of kid music, Stuffed animals... My daughter loves looking at pictures, so I make extra copies of prints and give them to her in the car. :) Have a nice trip!!

Wooden Pencil(s) and a notebook for the kid to make marks on the paper. Pencil not so sharpened. No mechanical pencil or pens, please.
A spoon and and a pot to make some noise (this will be his/her fav toy, u will see).
Two 1-Gallon (drinking) water if you ever need to wash him/her. Since you are travelling, rather than cloth towels, get VIVA brand clothlike paper towels.
Extra plastic shopping bags if he ever wants to throw up, or those small garbage.
Best of all, just the compassion to seat with him in the back and play with him as much as possible. :)

We traveled all the time with our kids when they were babies. One trick I learned was to go to a second hand store and purchase some inexpensive clothing. Babies mess up their clothes so quickly and it's so frustrating transporting dirty clothes. Use the secondhand clothes during the drive. That way when your baby makes a mess, you can just trash them at the rest stop or where ever you stop.

New toys - pull them out every once and a while , its great b/c they have never seen it b/f
Plan to drive during nap time or at night if you can. This makes it easier for everyone
