I just got a 6 month hand raised cockatiel from a private breeder. When I was at her house the bird perched on my hand and fingers, but since I brought him home today, he tries to bite me if I put my hand in the cage, and he hasn't moved from one perch. How do I get him to trust me and allow me to bring him out of his cage? Will he eventually move around his cage?

Thanks!

Your cockatiel sounds very terrified. I would suggest leaivng him alone for about a day, spend a lot of time near his cage though. Read magazines, eat, spend time talking to him so he gets to know your voice and becomes comfortable with you. After about a day of this you can try leaving his cage door open and he might come out to explore. On the third day you can use a dowel to coax him out. (Put the dowel in his cage and press it into his lower abdomen until he is forced to "step up"-don't forget to say step up or some other word when he does this so he'll learn to associate the command with stepping up) The first time out of the cage will be a little crazy, but he will eventually get used to you and you two will be bonded and happy.

You need to give your cockateil time to adjust to the new enviornment of your home. He still hasn't gotten used to this yet becuase he used to live in your private breeder's home. Try to keep the room where you are keeping him free of loud noises and other animals. Also, try to use calm soothing voices to call him over or try feeding him a treat or some bird seed. Hope this helps!

Cockatiels are fairly intelligent birds. One effect of this is that it takes them a while to form a bond. And yours is in a new place. Keep working with her and she will come around.

he seems to be scared, and needs time to adjust to where he/she is. I suggest keeping his flight feathers clipped while you are taming him so you dont spend hours chasing him and risking him hurting himself.
Try to entice him with some type of treat.
talk quietly, and stay at the same eye level as the bird, or he may be intimidated and more scared.
