I'm thinking about buying a video camera and mounting it inside the car to read the license plate of the next SOB that backs into my car and then drives away. I'd like to find a system that is motion-activated so that it doesn't have to be running 24/7. Has someone created such a system? It needs to be relatively small but good enough quality that it can clearly read the license plate at about 20-30 feet.

Thanks for the input so far, but it's not really helping. We are always hit on the front because we back into the parking spaces. The camera can be mounted inside the front windshield and it will catch the criminal almost 100% of the time.

You would need more then one camera. And it need not be expensive video camera, but some sort of smart camera. This smart camera would have an image sensor, coupled with a processor. This would be activated only when your vehicle is 'touched' by anything with a certain stress. Also this system would be active only when your car is parked.(not during u are driving it). The processor would be a low cost one which would just take some continuos images when system gets activated after car getting hit. Then there will be an optical character recognition software that would extract the number plate information from the images captured. These will be stored/displayed on simple LCD display. And inall you would 4 (one for each side of car) image sensors, and one processor unit doing intelligent things for you. (As there is very less probability of car getting hit from more then one side at the same time:-)).
Seems little high tech but cost of this gadget should be around $100- $200.
Hope this gives an idea....

Why pay the money when you can walk. I now park at the fringes of the parking lots and what if I walk the extra minutes, I need the exercise too.

OR GET INSURANCE 'FULL COVERAGE' TO COVER IT. BESIDES THAT THE CAMERA WOULD HAVE TO BE 360 CAMERA CAUSE YOU CAN BE BACKED INTO IN ALL DIRECTIONS, IT DEPENDS WHERE AND HOW YOU PARK.

it'd be hard, ur camera cannot be always shooting the right direction. otherwise it's gonna be some really expensive devices.
