How about rating each item on a scale of one to ten. "One" would mean that we should be least inclined to cry about this. "Ten" would mean we should be most inclined to cry about this.

Wow, the one that really got me was "Did poorly on an exam." Because my gut reaction was that would make me cry like about a 9 or 10!!!!!!!!! But then I realized how pathetic that was, and that should not make me cry at all! Interesting to put it in this perspective.
