i have a 60 in hdtv and the hd channels on my directv look great but the regular channels dont look that good is their anything i can do to make the regular channels look good o just better?

It is called aspect ratio
Look in your setup for your cable box. If you have time warner press settings then A
you can set the ratio so that on regular TV you have proper fill of the screen which is what you want. You don't want sidebars as they will burn into the screen if you view them a long time. I know what you mean the image looks FAT and wide. but that is the way it is to protect the screen then set the HD channels to fill the screen

Nope. your regular channels are not hd so unless they are local broadcast in HD like some are you will need an extra antenna to pick them up in HD. They are two different formats. There should be an option to connect an antenna to on your receiver.
