it monitors the air flow coming through the cold air intake and helps adjust the fuel and air ratio for it to run good,if it goes bad it will make one run bad,,and idle rough,,you can tap on it with the handle of a screw driver, and if it makes it run better its bad, this is the easiest sensor on a car to test, good luck with it,i hope this help,s.

Hard starting and bad mileage is likely.
The engine electronics depend on the MAS to monitor the amount and temperature of air coming in, to correctly meter the fuel and spark setting for best operation.
Better to get an engine check done ( I guess you just did?) and get the dam' thing fixed. Otherwise, a daisy-chain of unfortunate events can follow- exhaust gas analyser, catalytic can, mebbe flunk next smog check-- BTW, the MAS is just a minor sensor, not pricey by itself: could be fixed at home if that's the only problem.

I had a 93 ranger and when it went out it didn't start very well, turned over a lot more before it would start.Hope that helps or maybe you could tell us what your mustang is doing, that might be easier.
