A Maltese should have a black nose, not brown. It can be due to poor nutrition. Feed a quality food, such as Canidae, Solid Gold, Newman's Own, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, etc.
These foods can be found by looking in your local yellow pages under pet supplies. Go to those advertising Holistic Pet Foods. There are many good foods out there. But you can not get them in regular grocery stores, because they do very little advertising. Their profits go into food quality, not advertising.
Most foods on the grocers shelves contain by-products, BHA, BHT, colors and dyes, ethoxyquin, ethyl glycol, and many more nasty ingredients that are known carcinogens.
I have known pet owners who have switched to better foods and experienced things such as: The dogs ear now stands erect, like it is supposed to. The dog no longer has allergy problems. And even, yes, my dogs nose actually went back to its black color. The best changes were, my dog rarely has to see the vet for problems any longer.
Check it out and best to you.

Just like the few you see with the pink paw pads and noses. They change as they get a little older nothing to worry about as long as still healthy looking.

Nothing to worry about. Dogs can have huge changes in coat and coloring in the first couple years and after that you can still see changes but at a slower rate.
What you see is very normal.

Well I have a kitten who started out with the normal pink nose, but if you look close at her picture at left(she's 4 months old), her nose is brownish/black now. Nothing to worry about, don't worry. Ask your vet if you're that worried about it though.

My oldest schnauzer started losing pigment in her nose several years ago, My vet said it could be caused by a form of canine lupus (but she had no other symptoms) or vitaligo (what Michael Jackson claims he has) loss of pigment, no other symptoms, but in either case I put sun block on her nose every time she goes out, so it doesn't burn.

This will be caused by plastic food bowels normally or if you use metal bowls it can be caused by the lack of sunlight. If you use porcelain bowls, some of these have material in them that will cause problems also. Always use metal or find a pure porcelain. And if you are, then don't worry as the color will return in Summer.
