The idea is that many young people dont know what to do with their youth. When you are older, there will be many things you will have wished you had done that you cant do anymore. For example, its hard to run a marathon with a walker, or join a protest when you cant see well enough to get there. Many young people dont do worthwhile things while they are young and able, and regret wasting their youth when they are older.

Youth, a time of being healthy and almost invincible is wasted on the young only in the sense they do not realize what they have and yearn to be older etc. There are many older people who look back and say they wish they knew then what they know now and they would have done it differnently. There are jokes that retirement is wasted on the old. We should enjoy our retirement when we are young and can make the most of all that time off and the extra money , we can work till we die when we get older cause we arent going to be able to do much then anyway.

Ah yes, Mark Twain. For example: I am very well of financially, I am very well educated (PHD). I can't walk because of degenerative disks. I can only see out of one eye and I cannot hear high pitched sound so I miss music.
To be well off, and not have to work, to be well educated and young just does not happen. WHen you are young you have little but health and you try to destroy that by booze and cigs.

perhaps because when you are young you are carefree and don't appreciate it until you are older... and many older people would love to have their youth again and often tell young people to "live your life to the fullest". Good luck

when you are young, you have lots of energy but lack the life experience to really take advantage of it. when you are old, you are wise and know how to do more things but lack the physical capability to do so. similar to the saying that when you have lots of time, you have no money, but when you have lots of money, you have no time. (broke and care-free 20something vs. bedridden and elderly millionaire)
