Open-minded and educated. I mean real education, one that includes comparative religion, and not indoctrinated by any one religion.

I had a co-worker at one time who told me about a final exam in high school. He was an older gentleman, who happened to be an african muslim, but he had received what is referred to as a classical education, including comparative religion.

His final exam in this course was an oral one. He walked into the exam room and found a panel of teachers who would be asking questions. The first question was to compare various religions one to another.

He said that his answer began by asking the panel to think in terms of a tree. Each religion, he said, is a different branch on that tree, but they have only one trunk.

At this point, he was waved out of the room, and he though that he had failed miserably. He was understandably relieved to hear that his analogy was precisely the point of the course, so he had "nailed" the answer. No pun intended.

There is a story in judaism that a famour rabbi (Hillel) was once approached by two strangers who challenged him to stand on one foot while teaching them the torah (the five books of moses, genesis, exodus, leviticus, numbers and deuteronomy). He replied that the torah teaches us to respect one another, put his foot down, and then advised them to go out and learn the rest for themselves.

Every religion has at it's core the same basic idea - treat everyone with respect. They all say it differently, but they all say the same thing.
