Some are forced secret. Early freethinkers were not accepted by the church. Also any mystical, esoteric, kabbalah based orders at early times were very secret due to church feelings. Most people don't understand why the church had so much emphasis on what they called heresy. As far as the esoteric types you would need a full understanding of the secret to see why it is a secret. It is a secret in itself or a forced secret. Certain persons only learn it on their own free will an accord. It is not a secret I could tell you or force you down your throat.
Not everything secret is bad but secrets are needed to achieve goals as said above.

The reasons vary according to the group. Among the
different types of secret soieties, there are:
social, ethnic, service, trade, religious, politcal,
and criminal.
Each has a dedicated purpose. Generally, the secrecy
divides the ranks of the members from the non-members.
The sense of belonging to an exclusive group is attractive to many people especilly when their is a secret involved.
In Freemasonry, which is not technically a secret
society, a certain degree of secrecy is involved to
maintain the goals of the fraternity. In order for
the degrees of Masonry to make deep impressions on
men, the initiated are sworn to not reveal any secrets
relating to their initiation. This ensures that the
newly initiated will learn Masonry from other men.
Even if the ceremonies are exposed or spied upon,
Freemasonry is an experience only to be understood
through the practical use of it's principles in life
and inititaion by like minded men.

To conduct things in secret, of course.
And all of them have their different reasons, you know? It depends what society you are taking about.

I'm not sure why. Are you referring to the Masons in particular? Seems more like a boys club or a club of who's who. Not sure why it is secretive. Do you?
