baking powder won't be exactly the same, but it does bubble andit contains baking soda. It depends in part on the recipe.... in some it is more critical than others.

Baking soda is pretty "brass balls" so I don't know how you would substitute anything.
I think baking soda is a major part of baking powder, but I couldn't say if the other ingredients in baking powder would mess up your cooking.

There is no good substitute. Baking powder can be substituted with baking soda and cream of tartar but there is nothing to use in place of baking soda.
