In the thick of the relationship, you can never really know. I have mistaken infatuation for love a few times - that purely chemical and physical thing. I know that it is/was love when a few years after it has ended I still think of that person. The ones I didn't love I don't think about.
Real love does last - sometimes that is a good thing, sometimes if it doesn't work out, it isn't. Experience is the only way to know. I hope it's real for you - love is a wonderful thing, especially this time of year!

I think you know it's love when you're near that person your heart starts fluttering, or when you're away from that person you can't do anything but think about them. Also when you can let your guard down and just be yourself. When you feel as if you don't have to hide any of your hang-ups with this person. You can talk about anything with this person. But the best way to know for sure if you're in love or not is when you can pass gas in front of that person and not feel ashamed.

It is different for everyone...you'll just know. I was scared to death of commitment (didn't realize it then), I'd end a relationship over the first sign of trouble instead of working things out...My longest relationship before my husband was 5 months...I met my husband and we were just so comfortable together...he asked me to marry him 2 months after we met, and it didn't scare me...thats how I knew...we've been married for over 8 years now!
