My wife and I just purchased a home, and I'm leaving my Lab at home with my parents. We know we're getting a dog, but are arguing over what kind. I want a Boxer, because I want a larger, playful and loyal dog. She wants a Shar Pei, mostly because of how they look. I don't think she knows anything about them. I know they're quite prone to health issues (ears, eyes, kidnies), but I've heard they're also hard to train and not as playful. However, we both work during the day, so it'll be hard to give a Boxer the attention it deserves. I plan on getting either from a rescue.

If I absolutely had to choose between the two I'd get a Boxer. They can be obedience trained so they aren't as hyper and aren't as protective. Shar Pei's can be aggressive especially to children. (I'd classify a Shar Pei in the category of Pit bulls and Chowchows. It was bred as a fighter)
Any dog is prone to health problems, and I'd recommend a getting a Boxer from a well known breeder and making sure it checks out. However, it's good that you want to adopt. Good luck and here's a site it'll give info on health problems, temperament, grooming, orgin, etc.

I would recommend taking a look at rescue dogs from both. I personally have a Boxer and love him, but I know many people who have Shar Peis and love them. They are getting out of style again so you should have better luck finding one that's not as inbred, but not necessarily. Both have health issues, either can have skin issues. Boxers are prone to heart conditions and cancer. The Shar Peis I know are all friendly, but they are with families that have had them since puppihood. With getting a rescue dog, you are at the mercy of what your behavior and training ability can bring out, improve or maintain in either breed. Last but not least, I would recommend taking a look at the humane society and seeing what they have there. If you aren't totally set on one breed or another, you may find something there that is great for both of you. Best of luck.

Here's some info on each breed to help you decide.
Boxer : - always keen to work and play, but they can be rather boisterous and even in old age are still extremely athletic. Noted for its courage and discipline it makes an excellent guard dog. Also well suited to family life, the Boxer is very affectionate, loyal and fond of children. The Boxer needs plenty of exercise to keep going and feeling its best. Generally trustworthy but also has strong guarding instinct.
Shar Pei - the Shar Pei is a joy to be with. It is independent, well behaved and loves people. But they are prone to entropion, (inward rolling of the eyelids) an eye disease which can result to blindness unless treated promptly. It makes a fine house dog with a reputation for cleanliness and shar pei puppies are sometimes credited with the ability to house train themselves.
So, happy choosing!:)

I'm a dog groomer and I find that I break out in hives from the shar peis where I had contact with them, so do a few other of the girls in the salon, make sure you aren't allergic either way.

Definitely get what is better for you. Boxers need lots of space to run and can be very active. Not sure about shar pei's never owned one but definitely check with your local shelter to find out which is better for you and your lifestyle.

Yes, the boxer will be hyper and the sharpei is alot of health issue and is mainly a one person dog (I had one). Before she was 6 months old she had to have eye surgery.
You should get like a English Bull Dog that doesn't require alot of exercise or better yet keep the dog you have - the lab. Your lab will be devastated when you leave him - unless he has always lived with your parents.
Good luck.

Neither, both are prone to health problems. Shar Peis can be very aggressive and mean. Boxers can be overly protective.

shar pei's are like 1000 $ so, Id go w/a boxer of course if you want a good shelter dog, try petfinder.com you put in your zip-code and breed and such, it will pull up pictures and personality files of various available pets (in your case, shr-peis or boxers) and its much easier to find your dream pup. in your case,I suggest a pug, they are only prone to eye problems and cost only 400-500 $ they are very easy to train, cute, lovable, and cudly and can be trusted in a house alone (confined to a room with a baby gate mostly).
hope you find your dream pup!
