For the simple fact that Vietnam belongs to the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) makes the country belong to South East Asia geographically. I hope that makes sense.

The Philippines. The Japanese occupied the Phillipines from May 1942 to 1945. There was the famous Bataan Death March. General MacArthur and his troops landed in the Philippines in 1944 and tried to push out the Japanese. There is a lot of information about this on the web.
